Installation
I'll attempt to explain how to get the mod working here. Plus show how you can put it into its own folder. Using that you could have multiple mods installed at the same time with out them conflicting.Installing.
Basically your going to take the .rar file and unpack it into your Diablo II folder. You can also extract it into ANY folder you want, doesn't really matter. However, and this is important, if you place it in anywhere else BESIDES directly into your Diablo II folder there's extra steps to take in creating the shortcut to run the mod. Which is all explained below.
As for the shortcut, you should have one sitting on your desktop already for Diablo II. If you do, go ahead and make a copy of that and rename it to Blackened. If you do not, check your start menu and make a copy of the one in there. Or you can go to your Diablo II folder, find the Diablo II.exe and right click it. There should be an option that says "send to", going to that should pop up a menu with an option that says to desktop as shortcut.
Here's an example of my shortcut I use, I've circled each part in a color and written its explanation in the same color below.
Getting it to work!
It's a fairly simple thing to do really, basically you have to add on 2 commands in a short cut after you've unzipped it into your Diablo 2 folder.
-direct -txt
What that does is directs the game to a specific folder and tells it to make Bin files out of any .txt files in a specific folder with in the data folder. Take a look at the example above. You'll notice the -direct -txt is outside of the " ". Inside of that is directing it to the Diablo II.exe which will open up the game. Pretty simple.
Other folders
This is the section you have to pay attention to if you want to unpack the mod into a different folder then your Diablo II base folder. As the example shows I have the mod installed to a "Blackened" folder IN my "Diablo II" folder. That's all you have to do, just write the path the Data folder is in that you unpacked. As the example shows, if you make a folder in your Diablo II folder and call it Blackened. You'd add the \Blackened on, inside the " ".
To keep things simple I highly recommend to keep your mod folders INSIDE your Diablo II folder instead of putting them in random locations.
